Start a call

Start a video call

  1. Open the compose box.

  2. Click the video camera () icon at the bottom of the compose box. This will insert a Join video call. link into your message.

  3. Send the message.

  4. Click on the link in the message to start or join the call.

You can replace the "Join video call." label for the link with any text you like.

  1. Navigate to a stream, topic, or direct message view.

  2. Tap the video camera (video) button at the bottom of the app. This will insert a Click to join video call link into your message.

  3. If you are in a stream view, choose a destination topic by tapping the compose box and selecting an existing topic or typing a new topic name.

  4. Send the message.

  5. Tap the link in the message to start or join the call.

Start a voice call

  1. Open the compose box.

  2. Click the phone () icon at the bottom of the compose box. This will insert a Join voice call. link into your message.

  3. Send the message.

  4. Click on the link in the message to start or join the call.

Change your call provider

By default, Zulip integrates with Jitsi Meet, a fully-encrypted, 100% open source video conferencing solution. Organization administrators can also change the organization's call provider. The call providers supported by Zulip are:

If you choose BigBlueButton as the call provider, there will be a single button () for starting a call. The call is initiated with cameras turned off.

It is also possible to disable the video and voice call buttons for your organization by setting the provider to "None".

Change your organization's call provider

  1. Click on the gear () icon in the upper right corner of the web or desktop app.

  2. Select Organization settings.

  3. On the left, click Organization settings.

  4. Under Other settings, select the desired provider from the Call provider dropdown.

  5. Click Save changes.

Use a self-hosted instance of Jitsi Meet

Zulip uses the cloud version of Jitsi Meet as its default call provider. You can also use a self-hosted instance of Jitsi Meet.

  1. Click on the gear () icon in the upper right corner of the web or desktop app.

  2. Select Organization settings.

  3. On the left, click Organization settings.

  4. Under Other settings, select Custom URL from the Jitsi server URL dropdown.

  5. Enter the URL of your self-hosted Jitsi Meet server.

  6. Click Save changes.
